Latinx indie band Inner Wave continues to bring lo-fi psychedelic melodies and pleasing vocals that indie lovers anticipate and crave. On January 22, Inner Wave performed at The Bowery Ballroom in New York City as part of their 2022 “Apoptosis” tour. Indie-pop artist Huron John had joined them for their East Coast portion of the tour.

Huron John

John Wallace Conradi, also known as Huron John, opened up the show with his energetic performance. Alongside him, musician Rick West joined as the drummer. The duo demonstrated their energy to the crowd as Rick banged on the drums while Huron rotated instruments from playing his guitar to using his MIDI keyboard.

Huron continued to hit the crowd with his endless energy as he switched between singing and rapping his songs. As Huron performed “Huron Disko,” he started to rap and at one point even screamed into the mic. After which, he hopped and went right back to where he left off in the song.

The chemistry between Huron and Rick left the crowd cheering as they played the drums and electric guitar side by side. When they performed “Motocross” and “Friendzone,” the two played in sync and hit every beat of the song. Near the end of “Motocross,” Rick and Huron looked at each other and began to play the same beat more aggressively than before, with Huron also stomping his foot and nodding his head at a fast pace. The combination of the two playing together created a unique rhythm and had a groovy, techno-inspired tone.

The Main Act: Inner Wave

From Los Angeles, California, Inner Wave consists of lead vocalist and guitarist Pablo Sotelo, bassist and vocalist Jean Pierre Narvaez, guitarist and keyboardist Elijah Trujillo, drummer Luis Portillo, and keyboardist Jose Cruz. The band entered the world of indie-rock music 15 years ago.

The band made their entrance as the stage lights flashed around the room. Starting with “One in a Million,” Pablo moved his head back and forth while his hand moved on different frets of his guitar. They had the crowd cheering as their performance was in sync with the bright and colorful lights that roamed around the room.

Before continuing the show, Pablo greeted the crowd and said, “New York, how we feeling? We are happy to be back.” Inner Wave also performed their newer songs like “Take 3,” “Rey,” “Memory(Trees),” and “Fever.” During “Take 3”, Jean, Luis, Jose, and Elijah showed their skills as musicians when they synchronized their instruments and played with a steady tempo that signaled Pablo to start singing.

The crowd yelled with excitement after Elijah asked if they wanted to hear their older songs. Fans excitedly began to call out their song recommendations to the band. After a fan shouted “Bower,”  Pablo noticed a sign that read “PLS PLAY BOWER.” He reached for the sign, showed it to the crowd, and said “We might play this.”

The Finale

Inner Wave stepped back on stage during the encore and waved to the crowd as the band played the last few songs they had left. Pablo said to the crowd “Alright, let’s see if you know this one” before the band started to play “American Spirit.

Before The end, Pablo told the audience “We’ll be back, hopefully, we’ll see you there and stay safe we love you guys.” The band finished off their show with the song “1 4 2,” creating a memorable moment where Pablo and the crowd sang the entire song together.
