Finding inspiration in different aspects of womanhood and chapters of Dior’s history, creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri dived deep into the ‘60s for Dior’s Fall Winter 2024 collection. In the 1960s, when dressing fashionably became more accessible, Miss Dior, Dior’s debut Ready-to-Wear line saw its inception. Through this line, the French fashion house was challenged to create designs that could be produced in higher quantities but retained a touch of creativity and authenticity in each piece. This spirit lives on to be at the center of Chiuri’s latest presentation.

Back in the day, art, fashion, architecture and music were deeply intertwined, which allowed collaborations between artists across fields. For Marc Bohan, Dior’s creative director in the ‘60s,  Italian artist and designer Gabriella Crespi was a major source of inspiration. Chiuri, who also regards Crespi as an inspirational figure, also nodded at Crespi’s signature style, introducing bri hats into the collection. [Crespi] “symbolizes that pioneering generation of independent women determined to make a name for themselves through their work,” Dior shared.

“of bodies, armour and cages“

The enthusiasm for cross-field collaborations was also present in the mise-en-scène as Dior joined efforts with Indian artist Shakuntala Kulkarni to design the collection backdrop. Kulkarni is known for creating works that explore the womanly experience in different contexts. For Dior’s FW24 show, she adorned the space with sculptures and illustrations of full-body armors created with canes. Titled “of bodies, armour and cages,“ the series of sculptures offer a metaphor for female strength, courage, resilience, generosity and dignity. The armatures are meant to reflect how elements created to clothe, protect and transform the body can also imprison and constrain it.

Along with the installation, Kulkarni unveiled fragments of Juloos, a film she produced in 2016, printed on canvas. “This piece questions feminine subjectivity, not only from the point of view of the body and its social and political vulnerability, but above all from its power in relation to the urban space and social system in which we evolve,” explained curators Paola Ugolini and Maria Alicata.

An Ode to Miss Dior

On the runway, Chiuri referenced silhouettes and textiles found in the first Miss Dior boutique. Forms were elegant and feminine, while colors and textures bestowed the garments with the effortlessly chic quality of everyday wear. And though the A-line cut is a traditional silhouette, Chiuri created pieces that enhanced the wearer’s form without limiting their movement and freedom.

Colorwise, the collection remained rather neutral and earthy. However, pops of orange, pink, and neon green were spotted on the catwalk. Revisiting the brand’s archives, the looks also featured Dior’s signature animal print — a leopard pattern that pays homage to Christian Dior’s muse Mizza Bricard — and geometric patterns that were mainstays during Marc Bohan’s tenure as artistic director. There were also combinations of studs with embroideries, as well as beading subtly adding an edge. Additionally, the Miss Dior logo was splayed across various pieces, in what was meant to be a vocal representation of Chiuri’s manifesto of the season.

Front Row Icons

A Dior show isn’t complete with a star-studded guest list. Among the A-listers sitting front row, Dior’s resident sweetheart, BLACKPINK’s Jisoo, had all eyes on her. Sourced straight from the Pre-Fall 2024 collection, the ensemble was equal parts preppy, feminine and powerful. To top off the look with delicate details, Jisoo wore the must-have accessories of 2023: hair ribbons.
