Onitsuka Tiger launched its collaboration with Astro Boy at its pop-up store in Tokyo on December 12. One of the A-list celebrities in attendance was Thai star Gulf Kanawut, who showed off one of the collection’s central pieces: the Astro Boy-inspired high-top red shoes. 

The Look

Gulf is no stranger to the fashion scene. The actor and model has repeatedly demonstrated to be an unstoppable fashion force with his regular presence at international events and compelling daily life attire. This week’s Onitsuka Tiger event in Ginza was no different. Gulf once again proved to be one of the industry’s hottest players with his appearance in a laid-back, streetwear-inspired ensemble. But there was a hard-to-miss detail that took his outfit to the next level: the statement shoes that fashionably pay homage to Astro Boy’s iconic red boots. 

Gulf’s outfit featured pieces from Onitsuka Tiger’s newly released collection. Namely, a black work jacket with the Astro Boy logo and imagery. He sported the item over a simple grey crewneck sweatshirt, layered on top of a pinstripe shirt. Gulf also gave a nod to the preppy aesthetic with the shirt collar neatly folded over his sweatshirt’s neckline.

For the look’s bottom half, the Thai actor went for pinstripe blue and white trousers. The pants were tucked into the Onitsuka Tiger Astro Boy red shoes, which are designed to resemble the superhero’s red rocket boots. Finally, Gulf accessorized with an Astro Boy pouch worn in a cross-body style. The bag completed the cohesive look, matching not only the color palette but also the night’s manga-centered theme. 

Onitsuka Tiger x Astro Boy

Onitsuka Tiger’s newest collaboration with fellow Japanese icon Astro Boy was released exclusively at the brand’s themed pop-up shop in Tokyo. A global release, accessible online and physically in 12 countries, will follow in January 2024. This collection is the first of Onitsuka Tiger’s celebratory activities to come in 2024 to celebrate the brand’s 75th anniversary. In addition to the Astro Boy-inspired red shoes, Onitsuka Tiger’s latest collection features a series of pieces with Astro Boy emblems, including a black sweatsuit, white and blue pinstriped tops and bottoms, and a few accessories.  

Since 2022, Onitsuka Tiger has been climbing back into the fashion mainstream. With celebrity supporters like Suki Waterhouse, Kaia Gerber, TWICE’s Momo and Heart Evangelista, the brand has revived its offerings, including its signature ​​MEXICO 66™ shoes. 

Onitsuka Tiger’s Astro Boy collection continues the trend of animation-centered fashion and beauty collections tapping into icons from bygone eras. The collaboration also kicks off the brand’s 75th-anniversary festivities, setting a positive tone for the coming year.
