TWICE – “THIS IS FOR”

Image courtesy of JYP Entertainment/Republic Records.

TWICE have been a bubblegum beacon since their debut onto the K-pop stage in 2015, immediately making a name for themselves as a source for cute, poppy earworms. After a near perfect, decade-long run of schoolgirl crush anthems (“CHEER UP,” “What Is Love”) and tropical summer songs (“Dance The Night Away,” “Alcohol-Free”), TWICE have created a legacy that is hard to top – even by themselves.

Yet “THIS IS FOR” manages to do just that. Like most of their songs, “THIS IS FOR” is dedicated to their passionate fanbase, ONCE. Lyrics like “This is for all my ladies / Who don’t get hype enough / If you’ve been done wrong / Then this your song / So turn it up” encourage their young and predominately female fanbase to celebrate themselves.  A natural evolution for TWICE, “This Is For” is an empowering, feel-good track that embraces their signature bright and upbeat sound while acknowledging their maturity from lovestruck teens to confident grown women.

With an album full of collaborations with some serious industry heavy-hitters like Amy Allen,  Megan Bülow, Julian Bunetta, Dem Jointz, full8loom, MNEK, Tayla Parx, and John Ryan, THIS IS FOR represents yet another milestone for such a prolific group.

Once known for their cutesy songs about innocent crushes, TWICE’s departure to a more self-confident, celebratory title is a welcome one. And with the massive success of KPop Demon Hunters, for which members Jeongyeon, Jihyo, and Chaeyoung perform the OST “TAKEOVER,” and their upcoming headlining slot at Chicago’s Lollapalooza festival (the first K-pop girl group to do so), they definitely have a lot to celebrate.

K-pop’s formidable four, BLACKPINK, solidified their status as global powerhouses with their new digital single, “JUMP.” BLACKPINK have been keeping themselves busy since their last complete group release. Each member took charts and music festivals by storm with their global solo acts. After a three-year hiatus, BLACKPINK continue to dominate the musicscape with another club-ready ear-worm! “JUMP” taps into the hardstyle genre with a powerful beat sure to have you moving. The beat is driven by an addictive horn, fusing EDM elements with pulsating bass and drums. BLACKPINK joined forces with music industry heavy-hitters TEDDY, Diplo, 24, Zikai, Claudia Valentia, Jumpa, Malachiii, Jesse Bluu, Boaz Van De Beatz, Zecca, and Ape Drums for this remarkable return.

BLACKPINK are confident and assured in their delivery, inviting audiences to follow their lead. They sing: “Watch me runnin’ up the place / I’m already stuntin’ and my girls are on the way / Watch me open up the place / Wanna see you bumpin’ baby / Bouncin’ to the bass.” Audiences got their first glimpse of “JUMP” at the monumental “BLACKPINK WORLD TOUR <DEADLINE>” kickoff in Goyang, South Korea. The quartet are set to embark across 16 cities, with a staggering 31 shows in total. “JUMP” is not just a setlist staple for the upcoming tour, but a soon to be beloved BLACKPINK classic.

Big Ocean – “BUCKET HAT”

PJ and Jiseok of Big Ocean mean business in their latest track “BUCKET HAT.” Their singing rides over a clean beat consisting of guitar picking strums, a light steady drum rhythm, and occasional whispered vocals layered in the background. The simplistic beat highlights their vocals, making them stand out as they strive to make accessible music for those who are hard of hearing. “BUCKET HAT” can serve as a metaphor for a girl hiding her beauty, but this duo is on a mission to uncover what lies beneath. Or it can mean adding an air of mystery as a stylistic choice, as their lyrics go: “Drip so fly in my suit and tie / Singin’ bye, bye, bye like that, in my bucket hat.”

PJ and Jiseok’s performance video highlight the moody and flirtatious atmosphere of the track. By incorporating powerfully sharp moves with a mix of sign language, these two showcase Big Ocean’s versatility in a more mature concept. Addictive melodies along with a minimal beat will leave you hooked. You won’t want to say “bye bye bye” to “BUCKET HAT” once you’ve heard it!

bella amor – “simon says”

Gold Coast Australian native bella amor opens up about self-acceptance and being vulnerable in her latest single “simon says.” This track is all about being free to express your true self and having a safe space to do so. In an Instagram post, amor admits to falling in love with someone who showed her it was okay to be herself. “[Love] brought up a lot of insecurities I had within myself because I was so used to masking my emotions,” she says. In this indie rock ballad, amor’s vocals emulate the feeling of treading between wanting to be vulnerable but being afraid and wanting to play it safe. “If I showed you would you run the other way? / It’s the reason I’m so scared,” amor sings in the chorus. The lyrics touch on the uncomfortable feelings of change that comes with opening up, yet starting to do so and knowing that someone on the other end will be accepting.

Catch more new music from amor on August 1, when her debut EP, this is where i’m at, releases on all streaming platforms!

YOUNGJAE – “Escape to Me”

GOT7’s powerhouse vocalist YOUNGJAE has just dropped a refreshing duel track release called Fermata, which includes “Escape to Me” and “HERE WE GO.” In the title track “Escape to Me,” YOUNGJAE sings about the essence of coming back to who you are. The song opens with YOUNGJAE realizing it’s been a long time since he has looked up at the blue sky. He’s been too focused on running forward in life to the point of being afraid to fall behind. “Escape to Me” is a reminder to slow down and come back to yourself in times of feeling lost. “You don’t have to shape yourself to fit what the world wants / It’s okay to be a little different, move at your own pace,” he sings

The music video takes on a more playful and comedic tone as YOUNGJAE can be seen meeting and initially running away from himself. The two parallel each other: the YOUNGJAE who is busy trying to rush through life and the other who reminds him to appreciate more things and be more carefree. “Escape to Me” is a pop anthem that reminds listeners it’s okay to not face all your fears head on. Sometimes running away in order to find yourself again is the best option.

Jay Som Feat. Jim Adkins – “Float”

Singer-songwriter Melissa Duterte, who goes by the pen name Jay Som, announced her first new album in six years Belong which is set to release this October. From this album, Jay Som released her latest single “Float” on July 9. “This song is about desperately trying to hold on to past versions of yourself for self preservation,” Jim Adkins of Jimmy Ear World said in a press release. “The fear of the unknown is so overwhelming that sometimes the best solution is to sit with it instead of fighting or running from it.” Jay Som drew inspiration from early 2000s pop-punk and rock musical influences, which can be heard in this track. To supplement “Float,” the music video shows different perspectives of people at a houseparty — what they are doing at the party versus zoning out alone in fisheye lens scenes. The chorus, “Float, don’t fight,” becomes a mantra, reminding listeners to let go of what no longer serves you.

JEON SOMI – “EXTRA”

Soloist JEON SOMI makes her grand return after nearly a year with the bold, “EXTRA.” Known for her bubbly summer anthems, “EXTRA” is a more refined and mature sound for JEON SOMI. This new single is a sophisticated disco pop track that melts retro synths with a modern edge. “EXTRA” delves into the complexities of not playing the “starring role” for someone you love. A press release revealed that “EXTRA” both “captures the feeling of being just outside someone’s gaze” and “personifies the feeling of being an extra in a movie — drifting through scenes without ever being fully seen.”

JEON SOMI is assured and cool throughout the heartache, and this is evident in her effortless vocal delivery. Her sweet, yet laid-back vocals serve lines like, “What’s the point if I’m your extra? / Don’t say no because it hurts more / In this movie, I’m just an EXTRA.” JEON SOMI also gives a clever shoutout to her survival show roots in Produce 101 and project group I.O.I with the lines “Tried to give my hunnit to you / But you want that 101” — where 101 is pronounced as I.O.I. JEON SOMI has been in the spotlight for a decade now, but “EXTRA” proves her capabilities as an artist are limitless.

“White Rabbit” is a spicy R&B-Pop track reminiscent of the early aughts. Composed by mayojames and written by “Baby Tee” singer Galachie, the song starts off hot with sultry instrumentation. With Pittaya boldly declaring “I told you to show me how you like it…I know you’re a freak / just like a bunny in heat,” he sets the tone for the rest of the track. The lyrics reference Alice and the white rabbit she chases down the hole that leads her to Wonderland.

In the music video Pittaya serves serious ice prince vibes as he dances sensually with Punch of girl group 4EVE and Apo of boy band Dice, two of his close friends. The chemistry between them is playful yet charged, matching the song’s alluring and seductive tone.

LIMITLESS marks a standout debut for Pittaya. It is his first solo album after a string of successful singles and OSTs, and following his time as a member of T-pop group LAZ1. This new era solidifies him as a well rounded artist in full control of his own sound and style.
