Calling all ReVeluvs! SM Entertainment’s sweet as sugar, with a bittersweet bite, girl group are finally back. Red Velvet is returning on March 21, 6 PM KST, with their upcoming EP The ReVe Festival 2022 – Feel My Rhythm

The EP announcement came in the form of an animated picture posted on the Red Velvet official Twitter account. In an antique-styled room, there is a girl sitting atop a table with a cardboard box covering her head. The image goes from eerie to whimsical quickly as the room brightens with picture frames shaking, inanimate objects coming to life, and lights flickering. With a pull of the lever on the side of the unknown girl’s head, the room loses all life again and all that lingers is the smoke of the candles that were once lit.

Getting Into The Rhythm

With a title track such as “Feel My Rhythm,” it is no surprise that this comeback’s teasers are centered around music. Even the official comeback schedule was designed to look like a piece of sheet music. The clever image warps a musical clef into Red Velvet’s logo and uses time signature notations for the dates. This teaser takes detail to the next level as it was specifically put into the key of D major.

One fan even shared a snippet of what the sheet music teaser should sound like.

Calmato

Calmato is the name given to the first set of teasers for The ReVe Festival 2022 – Feel My Rhythm. It is also a musical cue used to notate for performers to become calm during a section of music. Red Velvet exudes a reserved and graceful energy with their calmato teasers.

However, it would not be Red Velvet without the slightest uneasiness added to the concept. The first image with the quintet features them displayed as vintage ballerina music box figurines in the antique room from the EP’s announcement.

Red Velvet did not stop with photos though. They even went as far to complete stop-motion-styled shoots of them rotating just as the classic music box figurines would.

The stills for each member also feature a unique change in shoes. From traditional ballet slippers to stylish high heels, the subtle change takes viewers out of the fantasy and reminds them that the girls are human — not just figurines to stare at.

By far, the most surreal of all the calmato concept photos are the images featuring Irene, Seulgi, Wendy, Joy, and Yeri each sitting in the place of the unknown girl. Decked out in their ballerina tutus, they each perch themselves atop the antique desk. The calmato teasers insinuate that the girls are alive in this room they are placed in.

Despite the somewhat eerie presence that lingers behind the images, the calmato concept teasers for Red Velvet still showcase a calming aura. The girls look polished and ready to perform after calmato.

Capriccioso

Capriccio pieces are lively, fast-paced musical compositions, and Red Velvet’s capriccioso concept teasers are filled to the brim with life. To kick off the capriccioso set is yet another moving image of a colorful garden setting with the quintet. A bright rainbow shoots across the sky, butterflies flutter, and even the garden hedge teddy bear peeks its head out.

But don’t be fooled so easily, this is not an entirely new place. In fact, the garden hedge bear is one of many similarities to the calmato antique room. Other details are the desk drawers at the bottom of the image, the ballerina music box being used as the base of the garden fountain, and the pearls swinging atop the desk. The capriccioso setting adds to the idea that the place where Red Velvet is located does indeed come to life occasionally.

Adorned with the rosiest gowns, Irene, Seulgi, Wendy, Joy, and Yeri are seen enjoying a day in the fantastical garden. Where roses are larger than life, merry-go-round horses soar freely, and the garden hedges and clouds are shaped like cats—the capriccioso teasers look like a daydream.

The Finale

To close off their teasers, Red Velvet shared photos, and a snippet from the “Feel My Rhythm” music video. All the members are wearing what seems to be a casual-style take on ballerina outfits. With soft, white dresses and black corsets that each match their own personal styles, Red Velvet radiates elegance with this photo set.

With such a strong emphasis on music with the previous concepts, ReVeluvs, fans of Red Velvet, theorized that these photos also tied into the music-centric theme with the members’ makeup.

“Feel My Rhythm,” exudes culture at its finest as a rendition of Johann Sebastian Bach’s “Air on a G String” soundtracks the teaser. The frequent nod to ballerinas was no coincidence, as the teaser appears to show Irene, Seulgi, Wendy, Joy, and Yeri each in their own ballet scenes—even taking the stage all together at one point.

Various dancers are seen wearing masks resembling the faces of birds, while also being covered in feathers. A pair of grand wings are seen spreading in front of Joy and Seulgi is seen sporting a black crown while yielding a sword. With such a prevalent ballet theme and emphasis on birds, perhaps these are subtle nods to the film “Black Swan.” The “Feel My Rhythm” teaser is a unique balance of gracefulness and a hint of horror.
