In the ever-bustling daily life where individualism thrives, communal dining invites us to reconnect with one another. As people gather around a shared table, they engage in a rich conversation, transforming the act of eating into a vibrant social experience.

Where every dish tells a story and every bite nurtures a bond, Malaysia-based Manisan Dessert Club shares their love in desserts and togetherness. In an atmosphere of warmth, EnVi spoke with Sugania Suriapragasam, founder of Manisan Dessert Club, about home desserts and communal dining.

The Idea Behind Manisan

The making of Manisan came from Suriapragasam’s concern of wanting to share her desserts but in a single portion. “I wanted to share my desserts with others by offering smaller portions, allowing them to try different treats without ordering a whole cake,” Suriapragasam explained via email. She expressed that it also allows her to feed into her creative curiosity to sell things she would not be able to sell in takeaways.

The word “manis” in “Manisan” translates to “sweet,” which aligns perfectly with the club’s focus on desserts. “The name draws inspiration from our desire to showcase all kinds of sweet treats, not just cakes and pastries. We want to highlight the many delicious desserts found in Malaysia that don’t fit the usual categories. By exploring different textures and flavors, we hope to celebrate the variety of sweets in everything we do at Manisan,” she stated. This led her into the making of Manisan, where she hosts a monthly pop-up selling desserts, either on her own or in collaboration with another baker or chef.

Bringing Communal Values to the Dining Table

In Manisan, the seating is intentionally made communal. Suriapragasam expressed that she wanted the dessert club to feel as if people are popping into their best friend’s house for tea and cakes. “The seating allows strangers sitting on one table to start a conversation especially over their love for desserts!”

With the support of her friends and family, along with the joy of being involved in the community, Suriapragasam finds it to be a truly heartwarming experience.

Manisan & Collaborations In A Home

The phrase “the more the merrier” applies to Manisan. Suriapragasam would do collaborations with people who also share the same love with her in desserts. Last month, Manisan welcomed Sucreebypreeta to their home, creating a menu full of chocolate and spices; a mixture of cardamom with canele, sticky chai in tres leches, and baba au maple with tonka cremeux and pistachio could be found in Manisan’s September specials.

While enjoying desserts, beverages must not be forgotten. A permanent collaborator in Manisan would be drinks by Garrick, who provides a wide selection of coffee, tea, and few traditional drinks serves as a companion to the desserts.
