UMI – “SOMEWHERE NEW”

With a wave of excitement, UMI is back after her last single “10AM” in June — but this time, she bears two singles and an album announcement! Her lead single “SOMEWHERE NEW” comes alongside its sister single “WHAT NOW” and was released with a dark, metallic music video. “SOMEWHERE NEW” encompasses the battle between a rising ominous, unsettling feeling of needing change while also wishing those in your past and present happiness.

The music video is a work of performance art, with UMI spinning in a dimly lit room in a dazed state. Between these clips are montages that could act as either memories or moments that reflect nostalgia. The visuals of “SOMEWHERE NEW” are similar to those in “HARD TRUTHS (feat. 6lack)” and come as a complete opposite to those featured in “10AM.” Though there may be similarities, each song is vastly different in message, which is intentional: UMI revealed in an Instagram post that each song on her upcoming album comes from stories by different people, each uniquely their own, with a universal message.

HOHYUN – “FLAWED”

After his impactful performance at D.C.’s KaptureCon, HOHYUN is now delivering raw and vulnerable vocals on “FLAWED.” With a dreamy, old-school production, “FLAWED” is a cinematic track that grows in depth with the addition of HOHYUN’s vocals. The intense instruments bring a rock base, but the singer’s diverse vocal range matches the beat with a classic performance perspective.

“FLAWED” creates a bold and gritty juxtaposition between every moving part, and it works perfectly for HOHYUN’s discography. From start to finish, the single is perfect for his newest chapter of music and welcomes in his next project, his future album Petrichor. If you’re interested in seeing “FLAWED” live, be sure to check out HOHYUN’s performance at K-pop Minicon on August 16th!

Rin – “potential”

After teasing the song on social media over half a year ago, Rin’s “potential” is now available for streaming and can finally be enjoyed in its full-length glory. “Potential” is for those having a sad girl summer while reflecting on what could have been with someone who didn’t feel the same in a relationship. The song is played with Rin’s signature vocal softness that enhances the feeling of girlhood and femininity on the track.

Supported by an acoustic guitar and the whimsical addition of occasional keys, “potential” is subtle yet floral in feel, like organic feelings coming and going. During the chorus, Rin explains the idea of “potential,” singing, “’Cause for a second / I thought I’d finally have my turn / Potential gets the best of me / I guess I’ll never learn,” before slowing down into each verse.

Rin has a trifecta of amazing releases so far this year with “homebody,” “best interest,” and “i figured you’d love me,” and they are now joined by “potential.” The singer also opened for The Two Lips and Esha Tewari in June and July — and we still have half a year left to see where else she takes us!

PRYVT have made their highly-anticipated return after the release of their album &SCENE in 2024, but this time they’re not alone. The track weaves through genres with rock, alternative, and pop infused throughout to create emotional and sonic waves.

In a press release, member Hanuel explained, “‘When I Go’ is a song about losing the memory of someone you love.” He continued, “It could be viewed in either perspective. The one to lose the memories or the one to see the memories being lost. But choosing to stick by each other through everything and hoping the lost memories [can] be found in the mind once again.” The music video dives even deeper into this narrative while showing the lovers’ memories on screen as they reunite, feeling both anxiety and joy. Both members, Hanuel and JT, are ready for “When I Go” to mark the start of their music for 2025, and have a lot more in store for the second half of the year.

MyVeronica gets raw and real with their latest single, “Sacred Heart,” a tender first taste of their upcoming EP Farewell Skylines, dropping August 8th. The song is a slow burn, but packed with emotion. The stripped-back production and explosive emotional turns create a tug-of-war between tenderness and chaos. “This song is an expression of love, a reminder to hold on to the things that matter. A reminder to choose love, even if it hurts,” says MyVeronica’s leader, Mia Lin, in a press release. The song’s official music video brings the song’s emotions to life, with the band paying homage to their hometown of Los Angeles. Shot and self-produced in Elysian Park, the video captures the golden-hour glow of the city skyline.

Izabella Rose – “Honey Honey Baby”

With the summertime haze of July in full effect, it’s never too late for a new summer pop anthem… and Izabella Rose has just what you need. This week, the up-and-coming Afro-Latina singer and Disney darling dropped her third single, “Honey Honey Baby,” a sweet retro-pop track about navigating a crush who’s giving mixed signals. Earlier this year, audiences were treated to a taste of “Honey Honey Baby” on Greater Than Distribution’sScouting for Stars” mall tour, with Rose as a mainstay performer.

Dripping with lush synths and a vibrant beat, the track beautifully captures the singer’s syrupy vocals and warm personality in a bite-sized 2.5-minute runtime. “Maybe I’m reading between the wrong lines / Maybe I’m caught in between my own time line,” she sings in the track’s opening verse, before giving into the earworm of a hook: “Honey honey baby, you drip your sweetness off of me / Won’t you be my honey bee?” In a press release, Rose stated, “I was actually inspired by a Kali Uchis song while getting ready for a mall tour, recorded a voice memo, and later it just all clicked with the beat a producer shared with me. We built the whole song in an hour — it was magic.” And like a good magician, Izabella Rose has appeared.
