This 19-year-old Australian singer-songwriter is ready to show you what she is made of. After a year and a half of work, on July 14, Hannah Bahng debuted with her single “perfect blues.” However, the independent artist doesn’t cease to continuously amaze us. She not only released a single, but she also announced the launch of her own company Bahng Entertainment. Before her debut, she amassed a large social media following with over 1.5 million subscribers on YouTube, where she vlogged and released singing covers. Bahng captivated her audience with her sarcasm and sense of humor. Now, the artist is carving her own path.

Self-made Artist

Bahng comes from a musically gifted family with her brother being Bang Chan from the K-pop group Stray Kids. However, she continues to prove to the world her own voice and identity with the support of her brother. Stepping up to the challenge, she wrote, composed, and produced “perfect blues,” as well as directed the music video. With a team of two people, herself and her manager, she has taken on many hats. From designing her own merch to finding a videographer, Bahng is surely earning her stripes. In an interview with Teen Vogue, she says she wouldn’t have it any other way. The independent artist states “I’m very grateful to be in a position where I have complete creative control over everything.” 

A Summer Bahnger

The single opens with a simple strumming of a ukulele. Bahng’s airy vocals bring a serene tone to the piece with her singing “playing the perfect blues.” After the pre-chorus, the song drops into a thumpy kick drum that has our heads bobbing along. Vibey guitar adds a retro feel that’s reminiscent of garage bands and boardwalk buskers. When the chorus comes, Bahng goes for impressive belts. She sings “I scream pleading to take me (take me far away) / I feel guilty singing ‘take me’ (I slumber today).” The song is dreamy in its tone, yet melancholic in its lyrics. Her voice has a brightness to it that lulls you into a wistful feel. Memories of a warm summer breeze, foamy waves, and bittersweet moments of the last day of summer come to mind listening to the single. A timeless summer song, “perfect blues” shines with Bahng’s vulnerability and masterful instrumentation. We can’t wait to blast the single on our car radios and roll down our windows as it plays.
