Japanese designer Koji Kamiya’s eponymous brand, KAMIYA, hosted both a six-day exhibition and runway show to present its Spring Summer 2024 collection at Rakuten Fashion Week TOKYO. Drawing inspiration from his own upbringing, Kamiya created a collection of elevated streetwear that premiered on August 28. To accompany the new season’s Ready-to-Wear launch, KAMIYA curated a pop-up exhibition (open from August 29 to September 3) that features the brand’s products in a trendy physical space.

Nothing From Nothing

Titled “Nothing From Nothing,” Kamiya’s SS24 collection was an ode to his youth in Osaka, a city recognized for its secondhand shopping culture. Fittingly, KAMIYA’s pieces fused hints of vintage on modern streetwear, a theme notable in the label’s latest line. This predilection for juxtaposition was also notable in the collection’s name, inspired by Billy Preston’s 1974 release, “Nothing From Nothing,” a song that — as Kamiya described in a press letter — melds sweet tunes and intense lyrics.

KAMIYA’s collection utilized both vivid colors and neutral tones to explore contrasting textures, such as distressed knits and synthetic fibers. Dominated by loose-fitting silhouettes and layers, the runway touched on recent trends with numerous statement pieces. Sitting on opposite ends of the streetwear spectrum, a washed leather ensemble and an oversized white sweatsuit showcased the collection’s range and identity. Denim took center stage for the collection’s bottoms, but knits, cotton, and satin silk also got a share of the spotlight.

Models presenting the collection sported unconventional hairstyles; some had neon fabrics incorporated into their hairdos, while others walked down the catwalk in volumized hair looks. Others donned hats to complete their outfits. Makeup was minimal, except for the standout black line across the models’ nose bridges, an eclectic detail that provided welcome cohesion across the collection.

Pop-up Store

KAMIYA’s exhibit has proven to be successful as well, drawing a remarkable crowd of supporters, including Japanese celebrities. Boy group BE:FIRST, actor Hayato Isamura, and model Yuto Kubota were all pictured at the KAMIYA pop-up. With an exciting launch for his Spring Summer 2024, Kamiya continues to grow his brand with collections that steadily expand his creative universe.
