Australian pop artist, Troye Sivan, dropped his latest single “Rush” on July 13, ahead of the release of his upcoming album, Something To Give Each Other. The single enjoyed massive success, garnering over 88 million streams on Spotify and 13 million views on YouTube in almost two months. On August 31, British pop-singer PinkPantheress and Stray Kids member, Hyunjin, joined Sivan on “Rush” for a fun, international remix of the track.

How the Remix Came to Be

Talk of the collaboration between the group of artists began when fans spotted Sivan and Hyunjin next to each other at Versace’s “La Vacanza” fashion show in Cannes, France. After the event, Sivan and Hyunjin both posted photos with each other. Sivan even asked the internet how he could get in contact with the K-pop idol.

Many just saw the interaction as friendly online banter, so it shocked fans when Sivan announced that the remix of “Rush” would be featuring not only Hyunjin, but  PinkPantheress

Addicted to the “Rush”

The original track is a fun, house-pop song fit for the summer. Troye sings sensually over an addictive club beat about feeling electric in the company of others at a party. The sexy vibe of the verses build up to the explosive chorus of deep voices proclaiming, “I feel the rush, addicted to your touch.” Alongside the track’s original release, Sivan dropped the music video that matches the energy of the song.

The music video feels straight out of the 90s, while encapsulating the hot energy of a club. Troye can be seen dancing alongside scantily clad people all enjoying themselves at a summer party. The video highlights sensual masculinity, with the sharp lines of masculine bodies and a rough dance accentuated throughout.

With the remix of “Rush,” PinkPantheress and Hyunjin’s soft vocals complement Sivan’s voice, adding a touch of femininity to the overall tone of the original song. As the beat slows down to a soft lull, PinkPantheress begins her verse. She sings about “dancing” with someone else while reminding her lover that they’re still the one for her. Her verse serves as a tasteful double entendre for sex and dancing, keeping with the vibe of party culture Sivan intended for the original song.

Following her, Hyunjin sings the final pre-chorus and chorus with Sivan, their voices melding together to add to the sultry aura of the track. The new version of the song expresses the brilliance of queer party culture in the summer just in time for the end of the season.
