For the first time since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, Libertine returned to New York Fashion Week to showcase its Spring Summer 2024 menswear and womenswear collections. The show took place at Spring Studios on September 9. Creative designer Johnson Hartig, who co-founded the brand in 2001, led the creation of the label’s two-part return to Fashion Week.

The Collection

With vivid colors and playful patterns, Libertine’s newest collection reflected designer Hartig’s expertise and innovative touch. Abundant floral patterns — “the ultimate joy and life force for birds, bees, and infinite insects,” as per the brand’s press letter — dominated the collection alongside patchwork textiles, polka dots, and hot pink hearts brought to life with hand silkscreening.

Libertine’s SS24 collection embedded creative detailing into traditional silhouettes and looks heavily inspired by great American sportswear from the 30s to the 70s. Floor-length dresses, suit jackets, and button-up blouses were speckled with black and white polka dots and red cubes, creating optical intricacies that challenged convention. Statement prints, plaid mohair, and kaleidoscopic lace decorated the pieces, adding a sense of playfulness to the runway. A series of looks featured flamboyant fringe appliques contrasting against neutral fabrics elegantly embroidered with flower motifs.
