Every season gives rise to new, innovative, and retro trends. This summer is no different; as people resume their pre-pandemic activities and travel starts up again, celebrities and influencers are sporting some clearly essential summer 2022 accessories.

Platform Shoes

Platform shoes are back in style thanks to Ariana Grande in Valentino and Dua Lipa in Versace. However, their history extends all the way back to Ancient Greece. In the 1930s, Salvatore Ferragamo introduced what we know as the modern platform shoe, and Vivienne Westwood revived the silhouette in 1993 with the Super Elevated Gillie. As everything Y2K seems to be trending again, it’s no shock that platforms are a spring and summer 2022 staple.

Bucket Hats

Bucket hats are a classic that are not leaving the mainstream fashion scene anytime soon. Trends may come and go — leather, nylon, faux-fur, denim — but designers will always find a way to work the bucket hat into it. If you plan on spending time in the sun this summer, bucket hats are the perfect cover.

Statement Sunglasses

Sunglasses are a closet staple regardless of the season, but if you’re in the northern hemisphere, summer equals plenty of sunshine. The right pair of sunnies is your best bet at combating the glare. High fashion designers and streetwear brands alike have been creatively incorporating sunglasses into their S/S 22 lines, and there are two clear, opposite themes: futuristic and nostalgic. Whereas Balenciaga draws on an extraterrestrial, metallic visual, Crap Eyewear is revisiting the ‘70s with their colorful, geometric silhouettes.

Chokers

Just like platform shoes, chokers are not newly trendy by any means. Though this 90s trend was revived circa 2016, this year chokers are making their own Y2K comeback this summer. Similarly to other brightly colored trends (hello, hot pink everything), chokers made their comeback in floral, lace, and bold styles. Notably, Anna Sui and Prabal Gurung debuted floral chokers in their Resort 2022 collections last year.

Bold Bags

Designers are embracing the post-pandemic, post-quarantine, post-lockdown bold color trend, and are giving bags and purses a chance to shine. New and old designs alike are being embraced by celebrities and influencers this summer. Both the runways and city streets are filled with fashionistas sporting bags ranging from coin purses to huge totes in bold colors and exciting textures.
